Non-Slip Prayer Mats for Hard Floors
A mat that creeps forward every time you go into prostration is distracting at best. Here is why it happens on hard floors and what actually fixes it.
Why prayer mats slide
Every prostration pushes a little sideways force through your hands, knees and toes. On carpet the fibres grab the mat and hold it. On smooth surfaces like tile, laminate, polished wood or stone there is almost no friction, so a light fabric mat slides. Dust on the floor, or a mat that has picked up a slight curl, makes it worse.
What makes a mat non-slip
- Rubberised backing: the most effective fix. A textured rubber underside grips smooth floors.
- Weight and density: heavier, denser mats resist movement better than thin, light ones.
- Lying flat: mats with reinforced edges curl less, so more of the base stays in contact.
Mat types on hard floors
Foam mats with a rubber base
The best option for hard floors. The base grips and the weight of the foam helps it stay put. The Rawdah Orthopedic has a micro-textured rubber underlay under its 12mm foam core, so you get grip and cushioning together.
Woven wool mats
A dense wool flatweave has more weight than a thin mat and moves less, and on carpet it stays put well. On very smooth floors, any woven mat without a rubber backing can still shift a little. A separate rug gripper underneath solves that.
Thin travel mats
Travel mats are built to be light, which works against grip. On hotel tiles or office floors, lay them on a rug or carpet where you can, or accept a little adjustment between units of prayer. The trade-off is being able to carry it everywhere.
Simple fixes for a mat that already slides
- Clean the floor. A dusty or slightly damp floor is far more slippery.
- Add a rug gripper pad. A thin non-slip underlay cut to size works under any woven mat.
- Flatten curled edges. Roll the mat the opposite way for a while so it lies flat.
- Choose the spot. A rug or carpeted area gives any mat more grip.
Safety
For older worshippers, or anyone less steady on their feet, a mat that stays put matters for more than convenience. See our guide to prayer mats for elderly people.
Frequently asked questions
How do I stop my prayer mat from slipping on tiles?
Choose a mat with a rubberised backing, keep the floor clean and dry, or place a non-slip rug gripper pad under a woven mat.
Do wool prayer mats slip on wooden floors?
A dense wool mat moves less than a thin one, but without a rubber backing it can still shift on polished wood. A thin rug gripper underneath fixes it.
Which Sujood mat has a non-slip base?
The Rawdah Orthopedic has a micro-textured rubber underlay designed to grip smooth floors such as tile, laminate and hardwood.
